We were able to speak to a lady suffering with PCOS. She wished to remain anonymous but she did give us an insight into what it is like living with PCOS on a daily basis and how it has affected her life!
Q. How did you first discover you had PCOS?
A. I had been having terrible stomach pains for a while and decided to go to the doctors about it. This was in November 2008 and that was when I first got diagnosed.
Q. What symptoms do you have?!
A. I have irregular periods, which are very painful and I am also slightly overweight. Luckily I do not have any excess hair!
Q. How did you feel when you were told there is no actual cure for PCOS and that symptoms can only be managed?!
A. When I first got told I had PCOS, I didn’t really know much about it. After having read leaflets on it, it is a bit disheartening to know that I will have it for life but then again it doesn’t seem too life threatening so I am glad about that.
Q. What were your feelings when you were told you may struggle to conceive?!
A. At first it didn’t bother me as I’m still young and didn’t really consider it. But after thinking about it for a while, it has upset me and I will consider fertility treatment if necessary when the time comes.
Q. What treatment have you received?!
A. At the moment I am currently not on any treatment. Because I am only in my early 20’s I don’t want any fertility treatment and as I don’t have any excess hair I’m not being treated for that. I recently had minor surgery as one of my cysts had corroded and I have had multiple scans.
Q. What impact has this had on your life?!
A. At the moment, it is proving to have a major impact on my life. I have been in and out of hospital for the past 6-12 months due to being in a lot of pain and obviously this has led me to have many days off work. I have been told recently that is things carry on I may have to have one of my ovaries removed, the most affected one, and hopefully this will stop a lot of the pain!
